How to see beyond the…..

Mar 2, 2011 | Remodeling

Well, here it is, the house we just bought.  I must say I am highly nervous for my parents to see these photos.  I can already hear them, “why did you buy this house, its filthy!”

This is where the special glasses need to be put on to look past the years worth of accumulation and look at the bones of the house.  That is hard to do when shades are drawn and you enter a dark and relatively filled house.  But I think that is also the key to finding a house that we could afford and have a shot at fixing up.

Looking beyond the stuff we saw a solidly built house with too many walls that needed to be opened up and literally shown some light.  I will send an as built and revised floor plan soon, for now you can see exactly what we saw at the time of purchase……

The idea behind this blog…..

Feb 28, 2011 | Remodeling

The reason we started the Encircle Design and Build blog…..was to capture a specific project.  One that has taken over a year to realize, but that finally, thank the heavens, happened.

Our goal has always been to buy a house in inner Portland and remodel it.  The ability to have creative freedom was super exciting and drove the mission to find a house.

The problem was that it took over a year of dedicated looking to finally find and buy the house.  The process was utterly frustrating and time consuming.  It seems its what you need to go through to find a “deal”.  Yes, even in today’s down turn real estate market, inner Portland, is still hot.

Thanks to Adam Rust, with Meadows Group Inc.  (Here is his info if anyone needs a dedicated, kind and low pressure realtor we highly recommend him!)

With Adam’s help, and over 10 other offers behind us, we can now proudly say that Encircle Design and Build now owns a 3 bedroom 2 bath house built in 1953 in the fantastic Alberta Arts District!

I will keep you as my confidants through this process of remodeling the house.  Fill you in on how we go through the act of deciding what to do, how to do it, how much it will cost, and what it will look like.   If there are any questions, thoughts, comments- please shout them out.  They say it takes a village to raise a child- I say the more people who can weigh in the better- everyone has something to add- and we are open!
